EMPIRE OF THE SUN 5/24

— May 24, 2025 —

As part of their 2025 Ask That God tour, Empire of the Sun brought their surreal, neon-drenched world to MGM Music Hall at Fenway on May 24 for the final stop of the tour. The Australian duo, known for their theatrical flair and electro-pop anthems, performed to a sold-out crowd that had clearly come ready to be transported. Boston’s own Roi Turbo opened the night with a charismatic, synth-heavy set that blended retro-futuristic visuals with pulsing dance rhythms—a fitting primer for what was to come.

When the headliners took the stage, they did so in full spectacle: elaborate costumes, futuristic headpieces, and a dazzling visual production that turned the MGM stage into a sci-fi dreamscape. They opened the set with “Changes,” the lead track from Ask That God, launching the audience into the lush, cinematic sound world that defines their latest album. From there, the show moved seamlessly between new material and beloved hits. Longtime fans were treated to euphoric renditions of “Walking on a Dream” and “We Are the People,” which inspired massive sing-alongs and a kinetic wave of dancing from the floor to the balconies.

Visually, the concert was as much an art installation as it was a musical performance. A massive LED screen cycled through surreal, digital landscapes, while synchronized lights and choreographed dancers gave each song added drama. Through frequent costume and set changes, the show maintained a seamless flow, each transition feeling purposeful and fluid. It was a masterclass in immersive production, with every element enhancing the music rather than distracting from it. The night closed with “Alive,” a soaring, joy-filled finale that was incredible to experience live—an unforgettable high point to end a truly spectacular show.
